The Study

Approximately three to five months after tragedy struck, a group of scientists were curious about the effects of losing a denture after a natural disaster. The participants were asked to complete surveys and reported problems such as: speech difficulties, eating issues, and embarrassment upon smiling. It also turns out that “Problems to Social Interaction” were prevalent after the loss of their dentures.

Why is the Study Significant?

Humans are highly social beings, who frequently share social information to let others know about their identity, emotions, sexual orientation, physical state, and personality traits. In fact, a human face and smile are two of the most powerful communicative tools needed for social communication.

A smile is a dynamic way of creating a bond and build rapport with other humans. When you smile at someone, he or she will smile back. That reciprocation is part of our neural communicative system- it’s in our DNA! What would you do if you were unable to share a smile with your surroundings? Unless you are completely insensitive to human interactions, the inability to smile would have negative effects on your personality, mood, and well-being.

How can you help someone who can’t smile?

Dentures were designed to bring back confidence and happiness. There is absolutely no reason to be embarrassed about having dentures. Your smile is a necessity that will help you live the best happy life you can.

If you know someone who needs a smile, you can subtly suggest that they meet with a dentist or denturist. Don’t be judgmental and avoid offensive comments. People from ALL walks of life need dentures, and it is important to treat them with respect and kindness. A gentle approach is extremely important. Focus on the positive aspects of smile transformations and how their lifestyle will be so much improved.
